This is a photo of my grandmother, Katharina, taken in Russia when she was about 16. I have always really liked this photo, and have wondered what she was thinking in that moment. The course of her life was in for a tumble -- the kind a revolution causes; this was taken before that trauma.
Her story stands, safe from alteration. The photo, however, I have used as the basis for some creative activity.
The photo is printed on card paper. In order to maintain the integrity of the paper, I had to be careful about how many holes I made doing the embroidery.

Beautiful picture taken over 40 years before she held either Rhonda or me in her arms. But still looks so much like the woman I got to know and love.
